Teaching Career

I spent 30 years teaching art at the middle grade level. I really love middle school students because they are so much fun. They speak their mind, have tender hearts, and are willing to try. For the most part they aren’t jaded, but believe in possibility. This career has shaped me as a person. Seeing those kids put themselves out there encourages me to believe in possibility too. So I’m pursuing my dream of becoming an author/illustrator.

Below you can have a glimpse of who I was as a teacher.

Teacher Chair / Library Chair Project

My favorite project was painting teacher chairs. Teachers would send their wooden chairs with a copy of their favorite painting to the art room. Students would research that artist and paint the masterpiece on the seat. Then they would paint the rest of that chair in their artist’s style. When we ran out of teacher chairs we painted library chairs. When all those had all been painted, I had students bring in a wooden stool to paint.
